Domaine Muriel Giudicelli

Patrimonio AOP · Corsica · biodynamics

Muriel Giudicelli comes from Chisa, a village clinging to the mountainside in the Fiumorbo on the east coast of Corsica. She radiates a quiet strength — and in Patrimonio she makes wines that put balance and expression first.

A detour into winegrowing

Muriel studied in Corsica: first a BTS in cattle farming at Sartène, then Corte for a postgraduate degree in communication, finishing with a thesis in sociology. Subjects that seem far removed from the work of a winegrower, but that shape a character before you jump in at the deep end.

With no training in oenology at all, she decided to settle in Patrimonio, the appellation with the most consistent quality on the island. She was guided by Antoine Arena, an emblematic winegrower and a genuine mentor, who found her first five hectares, planted with Muscat and Grenache. A few wine trips to Alsace and Italy helped her sharpen her plans.

2005: changing everything

Her first wines did not match what she was after. That set of conventional cuvées was made by an oenologist more interested in “products” out of the fridge than in work in the vineyard. Disappointed, Muriel decided in 2005 to change everything: over to biodynamics, less intervention, natural work in the cellar.

Indigenous yeasts, long pressings and Austrian Stockinger casks became her allies in letting her terroir speak as clearly as possible.

Schist, granite and limestone

Today the estate covers ten hectares. The Niellucciu and Vermentinu planted in 1998 have recently been joined by Sciaccarellu and Genovese. The grassed vineyards, in the commune of Poggio d’Oletta, grow on soils of schist, granite and limestone.

Selection is strict, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. The result is wines that stand out for their balance and their expression.
